YOUR HR BUSINESS PARTNERS: AVERAGE OR EXCEPTIONAL?

The HR Business Partner (HR BP) is here to stay. Love or loathe the title, it is hard to dispute the logic of having strategic people professionals at the management table. The HR Business Partner role is becoming a firm fixture on the organisational chart.

Orion Partners have teamed up with Jan Hills to better understand what makes an exceptional HR BP. By using "The Success Profile" methodology, the partners have been able to create a framework and a series of development programmes that help HR leaders deliver a step change in HR BP performance in their organisations. For Orion and Jan Hills, it was essential the study reflected the real world. Indepth interviews were carried out with HR BPs who were considered to be exceptional performers by their organisations, both private and public sector.

A central theme emerged: high performers in HR BP roles tend to excel not because of their technical skills or knowledge but because of their attitude. This attitude is made up of how they define their purpose and role, the beliefs they hold about the job and the mindset they have when doing the job.
